My Entrepreneurial Journey Begins

So I have learned a lot throughout my life by mentors, professors, family , friends and leaders; but a lesson that has been evident time and time again is that through experience I have learned the most. This is one of the reasons why I am beginning the entrepreneurial journey, and am helping an associate of mine begin her own business entitled, Simply Vilora. Simply Vilora is a jewelry company that sells real silver jewelry that is timeless, classy and perfect for every occasion, at very reasonable prices. Already, I have learned about the value of planning, research, and making adjustments along the way! I was thrilled to be asked to join this endeavor, and am excited to see how the future will unfold. I will eventually be hosting jewelry parties, organizing events that help women learn specific skills in the business field by experts, and help other women earn extra income by joining the team at Simply Vilora.

Fall Festivities

With Thanksgiving wrapping up, there is so much to be thankful for. I feel so blessed to have spent this last weekend with friends and family, and for the delicious food (Four full Thanksgiving dinners to be exact), and laughter. I think that often I take my loved ones, and family for granted, and forget to show my gratitude on a daily basis. I am healthy, have an incredible family, have been raised in a strong household, and don't have to worry about finding my next hot meal. I have so much to be thankful for.

I want to take a few minutes to reflect on what I am thankful for...

I am thankful for being able to compete in the Miss America Organization, and for the scholarship money that has helped me pursue my education. Through this program I have been able to pursue my desire to keep Donny's memory alive, and make an impact on the National Bone Marrow Registry. This program has enabled me to grow as a woman, as well as a confident speaker. I have had the opportunity to travel the state, and volunteer at various organizations and events to promote the MAO, as well as volunteerism. Last weekend was the Miss Capital City Pageant, and I was named Fourth-Runner Up among 18 other contestants, and received a nice scholarship for school. I have felt so blessed to be able to compete in this pageant among so many talented women, who are driven, and have a passion to change the world.

I am also thankful for an incredible family, who are there for my when I cry tears of joy, and tears of sorrow. They stand by my side no matter what the situation is, and are there to pick me up when I stumble. I am the person I am today because of their love and support. They encourage me to live my life to the fullest, without losing sight of what is truly important in life. I cannot thank them enough for the heart and soul they put into molding me into the person I am today! I love you all.

And for Jordan...thank you for being there for me through the thick and the thin. There are countless times that you are put second, and you are always waiting there for me with a smile. Just know that you are my number one (Behind God), and I appreciate you every single day. Thank you for your selflessness, and for your unconditional love. You truly are a blessing!

So many things to be thankful for, and not enough space or time to list them all. Another Thanksgiving has come and gone, and now it is time to be thankful for these things very single day. I no longer will wait until next Thanksgiving to tell people I am thankful for them, but I will be intentional in expressing my thanks and gratitude on a daily and habitual basis.

Thank you all for your support and encouragement, and I now encourage you to live each day as if it were Thanksgiving!

15 Gallons of Blood....360 Lives Potentially Saved.

Some people save lives by pulling civilians out of burning buildings, some save lives by saving people who are drowning, and some save lives by serving in our military...but then there are some people, ordinary people, who save lives by giving a part of themselves by giving their blood to those in need.

Every two seconds, someone needs a lifesaving blood donation to give them hope, and a second chance. Doug King is a an extraordinary man, who is a hero in the lives of 360 people's lives. Today, he donated his 15th gallon of blood, equaling 120 pints! Without expectation of anything in return, he has given his time, energy and blood to save the lives of others, and to make an impact in our world.

This is one of the many reasons that my parents and I woke up at 3:00 a.m. to drive to Midland, to surprise Doug King while he donated his 15th gallon of blood! His face said it all, and he was really touched to see us show up to his blood donation center at 6:30 in the morning with homemade cake and presents.

We gave Doug a special addition of Brian Boyle's Book, "Iron Heart," which is a story of his incredible survival and comeback after getting in a near-fatal car accident, being in a Coma for two months, teaching himself how to walk again, and then accomplishing an Iron Man (4.2 Mile Swim, 112 Mile Bike Ride and finishing with a 26.2 Mile Run) months after learning to walk. Brian was thrilled to be a part of Doug's special day, and made quite the impact by writing a note to Doug in the book expressing his appreciation of Doug's dedication and commitment to saving lives.

So thankful to have been a part of this special day, and I am confident that Doug will never forget this milestone:)

100 People. 100 Dollars. 100 Lives. Campaign

When I was 12 years old, I lost my childhood friend to Leukemia; a loss you never expect at such a young age. Donny Brigham was the most courageous person I knew, and throughout his two year battle with Leukemia, he maintained a positive outlook on life, and about his cancer. When asked if he was angry, Donny would respond, "Life is like an apple tree, and I am just the apple that God had picked." What an incredible, and inspiring statement from a ten year old lying in a hospital bed covered in tubes. I wonder if I could ever be that strong.

Donny changed my life. He made me realize that life is too short, and we never know when our last day will come, so it is important to live life to the fullest on a daily basis. At the age of 12, I made a vow and a commitment to make a difference in the field of Leukemia and to keep Donny's memory and legacy alive. I began this life-long devotion at a young age, volunteering and advocating for various causes beginning in middle school. As I went through high school, my involvement increased to volunteering at events for Cystic Fibrosis, : leading Blood Drives and hosting my own bone marrow drives.

I continued my journey with the Bone Marrow Registry thought the end of high school and college by volunteering/hosting nine bone marrow drives, recruiting over 800 potential donors. Each registrant is signing up to donate their bone marrow if ever chosen as a match to a cancer patient, with the hope of saving a life. These efforts have truly made a difference, and already, a life has been saved by a positive match from a donor at one of my drives. But now, my efforts have turned into a new direction...fundraising.

Each potential donor costs over $100 to sign up, but with funding and government grants, my drives were always free registration. This is not the case anymore, so instead of stopping the drives, I have decided to turn my focus to fundraising for more donors to join the registry. My campaign is titled, 100 People. 100 Dollars. 100 Lives. My goal is to find 100 people/organizations to donate $100 each, and essentially saving 100 lives (by allowing 100 more people to join the bone marrow registry). This goal of $10,000 will be achieved by May of 2012, which is the time I will graduate college. The money is directly donated to the Be the Match Foundation, which is a 501 c(3). Already, I have raised $2,600, and am looking forward to the next seven months of working hard to raise awareness of this issue, and the benefits of donating to this cause.

I know that I can't do this on my own. It is the help of every single person who makes a commitment to donate financially, or even help with suggestions of various grants or foundations that would be interested in this effort.

Finalist for the Governor's Service Award, Michigan's Youth Volunteer of the Year

Tonight is the night. The awards ceremony for being a finalist for the Governor's Service Award, Youth Volunteer of the Year. A prestigious honor, that can only be obtained through extensive nomination process, with countless letters of recommendation, proof of volunteerism, and a testimony by the community of the impact I have made.

Out of over 100 applicants, I was chosen as one of the 5 finalists(in this category) to attend this award ceremony, and be recognized by Governor Snyder and other State Leaders, of the commitment and my devotion to community service. The night began with an interview for the local Detroit News Channel, followed by a networking reception with fine foods, and an awards ceremony with entertainment and speakers to wrap up the night.

The people I met were inspiring, empowering, driven, and truly passionate to make a difference in this state; and I left Detroit ready for my next endeavor, determined I would begin a new level of volunteerism, and civic engagement. I received a $6,000/year scholarship, and was truly changed by this event. Thank you Carolyn Bloodworth for the nomination and for taking the time to believe in me throughout my entire journey.

A Heroic Act...A Saved Life

OnWednesday, November 13, 2010, Luke Jones had no idea what was in store for hislife, as he signed up as a potential donor on the National Bone MarrowRegistry. He filled out the paperwork, and swabbed the inside of his cheeks, ina matter of minutes. It was a choice he made, that eventually saved someone’slife, and gave hope.

OnSeptember 28, 2011, Luke spent eight hours hooked up to an apheresis machine,as he donated his bone marrow to a patient with cancer. This selfless, heroicact, is a single testimony of the direct impact the bone marrow registry is making.

Every day I wonder what plan God has for my life, but I am continually reminded that I need to stop worrying about the future, and live in the moment. God placed this passion on my heart when I lost my childhood friend, and even 10 years later, I am still inspired to be extraordinary, and make a difference. Helping with the Bone Marrow Registry is an easy way I can personally give back, keep Donny's memory alive, and continue helping those searching for a match, searching for hope. Just imagine is we had 100 more “Luke’s…”

Senior Year of College Begins

I remember getting on the bus as a Kindergartner for the first time as if it were yesterday. With my awful mullet, gaped teeth, and wide-eyed smile; I was ready to begin my educational journey.

And now, I am starting my last year of college at Spring Arbor University. My last year of having a flexible schedule, sleeping in, staying up late, and eating junk food until I feel sick...my last year of having the freedom to live my life without reporting to anyone. So many emotions are flooding my mind, and it is hard to reflect on this time. I am sad its almost over, but looking forward to start a new chapter to my life.

Throughout these past four years I have grown as an intellectual, Christian, friend, girlfriend, student, and woman. I have taken the experiences I have had, the opportunities I have grasped, and mistakes I have made; and learned from each lesson.

I have come to appreciate my friends and family, and what an incredible opportunity college has been for me; but as many say, "All good things must come to an end," but I say, these good things are just going to get better. I know that when I am leaving college, I will not have the freedom and flexible schedule, but I will be able to take on the world, and utilize my passions and dreams, to truly leave a legacy and make a difference.

I am not sure what this year will bring, but I am certain that God has a plan far greater than anything I could EVER imagine.

Just Focus and Do It....Lunch Meeting in Dallas, TX

Flying to Dallas, Texas for a Lunch Meeting with Darren Hardy; Publisher of SUCCESS Magazine

SUCCESS Magazine is designed to be the “foremost trusted source for personal achievement resources.” I personally have been a subscriber since high school, and continue to gain valuable knowledge, insight, and ways to grow personally and professionally from reading it. I am a driven woman, who strives to become better every day, and SUCCESS has challenged me to dream big, and realize the endless possibilities.

Last year as a class assignment for a Corporate Communications class, we were assigned to interview someone who held our dream job, or worked in the field in which we aspire to pursue careers. So, as SUCCESS Magazine always challenges its readers, I dreamed BIG, and emailed more than 50 people in the personal development/leadership field, who have significantly impacted our nation. From John Maxwell, to a staffer for the Detroit Pistons, I did not let their titles intimidate or slow me down.

And, as the law of large numbers suggests, I received a response from just one incredible person out of 50--Mr. Darren Hardy, publisher of SUCCESS Magazine. When I set up a phone interview with his assistant, I was shaking with excitement and nervousness, because I did not know what could result from this incredible opportunity to talk with a leading expert on leadership and personal achievement.

By the end of our twenty-minute phone interview, I had learned some things about Darren's life and his journey to success, and decided to boldly ask if I could visit him at his company's Texas office. And, as most polite people would respond, he agreed with enthusiasm. In the next few months, after sending him a hand-written thank-you note, I looked at my summer schedule, saved some money, and contacted Darren's secretary once again to follow through with my plan to fly to Texas to meet him in person. After four emails and "persistent follow-up," I finally received a date that Darren could meet with me for two hours at SUCCESS--a date that was only two weeks away. So within 45 minutes, I bought my plane ticket, and informed SUCCESS Magazine that I would be coming to take them up on this offer.

The morning of July 1st began by leaving my house at 4:45 a.m., driving to Detroit Metro for a 7:30 flight, and arriving in Dallas by 9:30 a.m. I then met the driver who was waiting for me in the airport holding a cardboard sign with my name written in black Sharpie (I've always wanted one of those!). I took my carry-on to the black SUV, and I was on my way to Video Plus/SUCCESS Media! After a tour of the warehouse/offices, I met some of the key members of the SUCCESS team, and finally, Darren Hardy, Publisher of SUCCESS Media.

I know this may all sound rather childish, but I must emphasize how much I have learned and looked up to Darren Hardy over the last few years as a result of reading his writing, and studying his personal leadership methods and challenges. So I was extremely excited to finally meet him face-to-face, to talk with him about the keys to success, and to learn how to go about finding my own success.

After a few hours of discussing leadership, where the magazine could go in the future, and what my future could hold, I left SUCCESS feeling enthusiastic, driven and motivated to turn up my life several notches to begin molding my own success. I have such a strong passion for SUCCESS' mission and vision, that I hope I will again be able to visit SUCCESS--and potentially be a part of their team some day.

The message I want to send from this crazy story is: JUST FOCUS AND DO IT! Do not hang back, waiting for great opportunities to find you. Rather, you must go out and make changes happen for yourself. Each day we wake up and are given a choice of how we plan to live our lives TODAY. Are we going to accept the path our lives have already taken, or are we going to stand above the norm/average and become GREAT? Visiting SUCCESS was an incredible experience that I will never forget.

A Recipient's Story. A Changed Heart.

The truth of Margaret Mead's quote (above) has been evident throughout my Washington, D.C., American Red Cross experience. I have always had a passion for civic engagement because I wanted to make a difference in the lives of others. So the American Red Cross NAIA Collegiate Leadership Program was the perfect fit for my aspirations and vision.

Some incredible speakers have shared their testimonies about the Red Cross with us. But one in particular changed my thinking about the Red Cross, and increased my passion for this organization.

That one speaker was Andrea Koslow, the Senior Director of Brand and Creative Marketing. As Andrea shared her story of how she landed a career with the Red Cross and of how the Red Cross saved her daughter's life, my passion for the Red Cross intensified.

Andrea captivated us with professional stories of meeting celebrities such as Blake Shelton (with a mullet), Brad Paisley and Dierks Bentley in her former position with nonprofit groups. As a huge country fan myself, my eyes were opened to the how much awareness such celebrities are capable of generating for a good cause.

Our world constantly feeds us bad news -- that our economy is in the tank, and that job market prospects are bleak. But rarely do we see stories about celebrities giving back, or charities partnering with the idols of millions of Americans for a noble cause. Andrea explained that she has worked with many celebrities in various Red Cross marketing campaigns to build national recognition of the Red Cross and its relevance in changing our world.

While Andrea poured out her heart about her daughter's life-saving blood transfusion, our eyes teared up with emotion and pride for what the Red Cross can, and does do, on a daily basis…SAVES LIVES. From that point on, I understood that what I am doing in D.C. is not only becoming a stronger person, but I am learning the vital value the Red Cross and other similar service organizations have to offer our nation.

Although this trip has been an blast, it has also been an incredible educational opportunity. It has provided me with so much to take back to my campus blood drive initiative. Yes, I now know for a fact that we, as the NAIA Collegiate Leadership Class of 2011, will make a difference on our campuses, on our communities, and on this world--one blood donor at a time! The Marble Palace, Zumba, Giving Blood, and WALKING!

In the last few days we have learned so much about the American Red Cross in regard to both its blood services side and also the humanitarian side of its mission. I have gained such pride and passion for this organization, and cannot wait to bring back what I've learned from this program to campus and instill my passion there.

This is in front of the "Marble Palace," the National American Red Cross Headquarters. We had the privilege of going there to speak with Gail McGovern, CEO of the American Red Cross.

This group has been incredible--and I have enjoyed walking all over DC with them! I've developed a deep relationship with each of them. Prior to flying to DC, I was a little nervous about meeting 13 other students from across the nation, but I have since grown so close to them. Their drive and passion for servinge their communities and the Red Cross are inspiring. I truly believe that these are our leaders of tomorrow, and I am so blessed to have 13 new friends.

Washington DC, American Red Cross NAIA Collegiate Leadership Program

Last Sunday I loaded my 50-pound suit case in the car, grabbed a hot tea, and my camera, and was off to Washington D.C.! I was one of 14 students from across the country chosen to participate in the Red Cross NAIA Collegiate Leadership Program, which focuses on increasing blood donation on campuses. During my junior year at Spring Arbor University, I helped organize five blood drives, with mixed results. But I learned a valuable lesson: by participating in civic activities, I am able to save lives, and make a difference in my community!

The first day here, many Red Cross executives and guest speakers educated us about the continuing need for blood, and demonstrated their passion for the Red Cross mission. They spoke about how successfully this program has been in increasing blood donations on college campuses. I am already learning so much, and am excited to learn much more.
Equally as important, I have created many friendships with students from across the nation--the kind of relationships that last a lifetime. (Pictured above: Caitie Cunningham from Alabama (center), and Julie Teeple from Missouri (right).

From the moment we walked into the National Headquarters, we have been given more free Red Cross gear than I could have imagined. Our Student Leader and Mentor, Katie McLintock, explained that the first day would be like a "surprise birthday party," and that we would be pleased with our gifts...and she was right on point!

Looking ahead to the next two weeks, we have a lot of exciting events planned, including a tour of the White House! White House tours are extremely rare now (our security clearance began weeks before we arrived), but our class has been cleared to go inside of our President's home next Wednesday!

With this being my first time to DC, I feel like a little kid in Disney Land! All of the monumental sights that I have seen in movies and in history books are coming to life, as I see them in person. D.C. has already opened my eyes regarding what we, as a nation, have gone through to gain the tremendous freedom we enjoy today. My appreciation for our country has grown. I realize that I sometimes take freedom for granted, and have not respected enough the pivotal people who have molded our history.

At the World War II Memorial, I was representing our state, as the only Michigander in our group. So proud to be an American (and a Michigander)!
Funny story #1: This is Randon, clowning around with another tourist. As she was telling us how amazing it would be to get engaged at the Lincoln Memorial, Randon literally got down on one knee, proposed, and she said, YES! It was priceless! The woman's younger children ran away in embarrassment. It definitely will remain one of the funniest moments of our trip.

Taking Home the Championship, With Only Six

Grand Valley State University AAU Volleyball Tournament Champs!

This past Saturday, my 7th and 8th grade Net Threat Team took home the Gold Championship Win at GVSU! We ended the day with only six girls left to play, after the flu hit our team throughout the day; but they stuck it out and won the tournament!

Annie Jones (my roommate) and I have had the chance to coach Concord's 7th/8th grade girls in an AAU Club Team called Net Threat. I have had an absolute blast with these girls, and feel so blessed to have been able to develop relationships with all of them, and be able to coach the game I love. The philosophy of our coaching style is to allow the girls to have fun, while maintaining and improving the fundamentals of volleyball. Nice work team! Now practice for the State Tournament.

My First Big Tom Turkey

Sunday, May 8th, 2011: Happy Mother's Day

Today wasn't just Mother's Day, but it was day of huge success...I shot my first big tom turkey!

I named him "Mr. Tommy Boy" (pictured above). He sported an 11" beard, and 1" spurs...a BIG turkey if you ask any hunter.

I cannot take full credit. Jordan called in this Tom from two fields over, bringing him within 60 yards of where we sat-- allowing me to get a perfect shot.

What a weekend! On Friday I was in a cocktail dress co-emceeing an awards event at Spring Arbor University, and the next morning a group of us were dressed in full camo enroute to Bad Axe, Michigan (yes, that's really the name of the town!), to hunt turkey! We spent the entire day Saturday watching and calling turkey. By the end of the day, we'd seen eight hens and two jakes (younger males), but all were too far away to shoot.

Mother's Day morning, back in my hometown, Jordan and I reached his farm at 6:00 a.m. for day two of the hunt. Within 30 minutes, I was looking at my prized turkey! Jordon got this whole thrilling experience on film. First you hear Jordan calling the bird; then you see the turkey strut proudly into the viewfinder; Jordan quietly tells me to be patient and wait; my shot that dropped the tom; and our reaction afterwards. I'm still not sure who was more excited when that big turkey fell--Jordan or me!!

Mr. Tommy Boy was a beautiful bird, and I am looking forward to Emily Weeks mounting it for me so that I can cherish that memory forever.

Going to Washington D.C. on behalf of the American Red Cross

Successful Blood Drive...heading in June to Washington, D.C. for two weeks !

On April 12th, we held another successful blood drive at Spring Arbor Free Methodist Church. So many potential donors came to donate blood, that we actually ran out of bags. The strong turnout resulted in 161 units of life-saving blood!

We ended our 2010-2011 Red Cross Collegiate Leadership Program with our biggest volume ever! Our last drive of the year brought in more units of usable blood than any other blood drive in Spring Arbor Free Methodist history! Thank you all for reaching out to donate your blood, and lend your moral support to this excellent cause!

I am privileged to be among the 12 students nationwide chosen by the Red Cross to spend two weeks this summer in Washington D.C. for the American Red Cross Collegiate Leadership Conference! I am excited to meet other NAIA students from across the United States who all strive to help the Red Cross excel. At our universities and colleges, each of us works to build awareness of the Red Cross' work and achievements. While we are in Washington, we will discuss several strategic issues, tour the White House, and visit other historic landmarks. I look forward to whatever opportunities will arise from this experience, and where God will take me next!

My #1 fans and support system: I am so thankful to have parents who are there for me through the wins and losses, the celebrations and heartaches. I am the woman I am today because of the way they raised me, instilling a drive and passion to live my life to the fullest.

Above: Some of my best friends have traveled every weekend to cheer me on, no matter the distance--in this case four and a half hours from home. I am so thankful to have people in my life who love me, who hold me accountable, but most of all, who are brothers and sisters in Christ.

I am blessed to have the most supportive friends and family.

Through this past month, I have learned quite a bit about myself, and have grown some tough skin. These pageants are not always easy emotionally. Depending on the outcome of the competition, I sometimes feel rejected. But I have learned to trust in God, and to remind myself that no matter what happens, He has a far greater plan than anything I can ever imagine. I admit that it's sometimes hard to patiently wait for Him. But I am confident that He has my entire life planned and is guiding my every step. I will continue to trust in God and give Him the glory for every achievement and success in my life.

On February 12th at the Miss Heart of Michigan Pageant, I did not place, but I did have a great weekend enjoying the beautiful Traverse City area, and spending time with some incredible ladies. On February 19th, I competed in the Miss Lady of the Lakes pageant in Walled Lake and was named First Runner-Up, the Evening Gown Winner, and received the Four Points Award, winning scholarship money and other great incentives.

Thank you all for standing by me through this long, and exhausting month. I cannot begin to express my gratitude and the overwhelming appreciation I feel for the countless ways I have been blessed.

South Africa for 23 Days

This is AFRICA!

I left on December 29, 2010 for an incredible and life-changing experience--to spend over three weeks in South Africa. Although I had previously traveled to over 20 countries with my family, this was unlike anything I'd ever experienced. Our trip was part of a cross-cultural class at Spring Arbor University, in which we studied various aspects of South African economy, government, family, education and religion. We immersed ourselves in the culture and learned more than I ,ever expected! This marks the beginning of a remarkable 2011!

We were able to play with baby cubs and learn about them.

We stayed for a week at H.E.L.P. Ministries, which focuses on healing, evangelism, and leadership programs. Cecil Biggby began the organization, including a soup kitchen which feeds 5,000 children and 1,000 adults every single day. We traveled to various villages to serve soup and bread to needy people. It was heartbreaking to see so many children without shoes, wearing dirty and torn clothing, with sores on their faces, come to receive a meager meal. It is experiences such as these that helped us count our blessings and realize how much we take for granted here in America.

We visited an ostrich farm where I actually got to ride an ostrich! It's not like the petting zoo experience I was expecting....they run fast!

We went on the sunrise safari at 5:45 in the morning, and came across two female lions in the road. The driver shut the engine off, and we sat less then 10 yards away from them with no caged windows or other protection. It was quite a thrill!

On our sunset/night safari we saw cape buffalo, rhinos, kudu, impalas, dikers, snakes and giraffes. But the night's finale was stopping for these two large male lions in the road.

After services at Soweto Baptist College Church, we stayed with the kids to sing, dance, play tag, and to just share love and compassion. While we were touring a village of shacks, these two adorable little girls came up and grabbed my hands and hugged me. I was amazed at the impact a little love and compassion can have. Some children do not receive that on a daily basis.

At another village in Cape Town where we were distributing soup and bread, another little girl grabbed my hand and hugged me. At first glance, she had nothing but the little container she held for her portion of soup. She was dirty, barefoot, her clothes were torn, her dirty hair was filled with dust and knots. Although she was not wealthy, educated, clean, or able to speak English, she did have something wonderful--the ability to show love. In times of heartache and hardship, this little girl knew how to seek someone who would return her love. When I asked what her name was, she looked up at me in silence with a yearning look, a face full of longing for someone to give her attention and treat her like a princess.

I stood hand-in-hand in line with her, waiting for her rationed soup and slice of bread, feeling a wave of emotion running through me. I wanted to cry, and bring this little girl back with me to America, believing that I could provide her with a better life than she would ever dream. Her mother and father were nowhere to be seen, and I felt that she was all alone. This child couldn’t have been more than four years old, and yet she was waiting in line by herself to get lunch. My heart ached for her, and as I was imagining what I could do for her, I realized that all she needed and wanted was for me to show her some compassion. I could find nothing to say to her, but she was satisfied with me simply holding her hand and being next to her.

Finally she reached the front of the line to receive her food, so we sat down together on the curb. I silently watched her as she bolted her meal quickly--without even taking a breath. I wondered when she had eaten last, and when her next meal would be. I never will know the answer to those questions. As our group finished distributing all the soup for the area, I had to go with them to feed the next village. My four-year-old friend stood up and gave me the tightest hug. We stood there holding each other for what seemed to be an eternity. I felt my eyes tear up. I couldn’t control my thoughts screaming inside of me, “This isn’t fair, how can this be happening to children across the world, and I can sit at home in peace not doing anything about it!?” I felt helpless, wishing I could take her home with me, but it was time to say goodbye and leave her standing there--alone again. As our hug ended, her face showed it all. She was filled with fulfillment, and happiness, but was disappointed I had to leave. And the sad part is that she is not the only child like this…there are thousands of neglected children who live in poverty every single day across the world. And at that moment, I couldn’t do anything about it but watch.

I will forever hold that image near and dear to my heart. It reminded me of the many blessings I have every day, and how grateful I am to my family and upbringing. I never had to worry about food, water, or even education. I had always considered these things just a part of my life that would always be there without a doubt. But to these children, they pray and hope that they are able to eat today. What an eye-opening moment for me. I cannot help but get angry with myself for taking these necessities for granted, and for not thinking about others who are living in poverty--starving physically, emotionally or spiritually.

Please count your blessings, and pray for those who are less fortunate than us.

Life Beyond a Crown

Although No Crown...Still have Faith

I decided to change the title of my blog, since I am obviously no longer Miss Jackson, and yet am still very involved in my community and the Miss America Organization. Although I do not currently have a crown, I am still able to volunteer, and work within the area of my platform, Leukemia Awareness and Joining the National Bone Marrow Registry. I recently hosted a Bone Marrow Drive at Spring Arbor University, in which 86 new people joined the Registry, increasing to 703 the total number of donors I have helped register!

After giving up my title, I was able to take some time and reflect on my 16-month reign, and to focus on my relationship with God. It became clear that I need to keep Him as the focus of my Miss Michigan pursuit. I strongly believe that God has given me the gift of compassion, and the drive to make a difference in my community and in this world. The Miss America Organization has helped me utilize these gifts to help further His Kingdom. I have learned the importance of trusting in God no matter what situation life brings, and to understand that EVERYTHING works together for good for those who love the Lord. This has been a hard lesson to accept, because I am a person of planning and preparing for the future. I am growing in my reliance on God, and in trusting that His plan is better than anything I could ever imagine.

This Blog will be designed to share with you my journey in pursuing another local title; but also my walk with God. I appreciate your continual support in all that I do.

175th Anniversary of Concord Schools Parade

Concord Community Schools celebrated its 175th anniversary of quality education on 9-10-10. I was honored to be invited to ride in the parade which recognized alumni and board members who have made a difference in our community.

With my neighbor, adopted Aunt, and former School Board Member, Linda Trombley, who rode in the parade with other former board members.

I enjoyed seeing some of the great girls I have coached from Concord:)

This parade was a lot of fun, especially since it was in my home town, celebrating the success of our community schools. There are many teachers, students and administrators from the Concord Schools and community who have helped shape me into the woman I am today. Thank you, Concord, for all your support!

Pumping Gas for United Way of Jackson

The United Way of Jackson hosted a county-wide fundraiser at area gas stations, where volunteers earned tips in exchange for washing windows and pumping gas. As one of the "celebrity" gas pumpers, our team raised a lot of money in just one hour!

Special Days Camp in Montague

Special Days Camp hosted a Queen and Hero for a Day ("QFAD") event at Camp Pendalouan in Montague, MI. I had the opportunity to spend the afternoon with some of my Miss Michigan sisters, as we volunteered together at this QFAD event. This camp hosts children who have cancer or are cancer survivors.

The Grand Rapids Fire Department also volunteered at this event!

Obviously, they were comfortable enough with themselves to wear pink boas!

The girls got to get their nails, hair and makeup done, and then I dressed them up and "crowned" them as Princesses.

These kids were so inspiring, and they loved being pampered!

It was amazing to hear the stories of how this wonderful Camp affects the lives of cancer survivors. The camp staff is entirely volunteer-based, with each person donating one-to-two weeks of service. Most of the volunteers are themselves former campers. I hope I am able to volunteer at Special Days Camps in the future!

First Annual Queen for a Day Event

The Jackson County RoseQueen Pageant held its first annual Queen for a Day (QFAD) event. For only $28, each young girl got to spend the whole day with the RoseQueen contestants who polished their nails, painted their faces, played games with them, and even taught them a dance. In the evening they enjoyed dinner with the RoseQueen at the Cascades Manor House, and performed their dance before an audience at the Cascade Falls. All the proceeds went to the RoseQueen Pageant for scholarships for the young women.

The event was a complete success, with more than 50 girls in the QFAD program, as well as over 100 people attending the dinner.

As we paraded over to the Falls, the girls showed the crowd their newly-learned pageant wave and royal walking stride! Some of the Queens breaking it down to "Party in the USA."
Each girl who participated got a "Crowning Moment," in front of the entire crowd at the Falls as we announced their names.
And to conclude the night, we signed autographs and gave them keepsake certificates to commemorate this special event!

This event is the first of many that the Jackson RoseQueen Pageant will sponsor. It gave the girls an opportunity to be a queen for an entire day, and feel special about themselves. Paige Poling, Jackson's beautiful Outstanding Teen, did a wonderful job all day interacting with the girls, who got to play a game with Paige and get to know her!
The girls were so adorable, and they were truly mesmerized by our crowns. This event not only raised money for scholarship, but was a way to give back to the community, and show these little girls that they are ALL Queens!

Life after Miss Michigan Week

After my Miss Michigan experience, I was invited to appear on the Bart Hawley Show on Jackson Television Network. I was able to share with Jackson details of my week at Muskegon as well as my future plans.

I hosted a blood drive on Tuesday, August 2nd as part of my internship with the American Red Cross. The drive was such a success that we ran out of blood bags and had to shut the drive down early! Thank you to all the donors who helped make this such a success!

Jackson County RoseQueen Co-Executive Director, Rebecca Hilleary was one of the blood donors. The advertisements for the drive had a picture of me wearing my crown to raise more awareness.

The crown was on display at the desk where people registered to give blood. This gave me another opportunity to speak about the RoseQueen Pageant and the Miss America Organization. Thanks again, Jackson community, for your continual support.

It was such a blessing to get to share a meal with my family and friends at Saturday's Friends and Family luncheon!

This past week was a whirlwind, but it was one of the best weeks of my life! It was truly life-changing and inspiring, being around 29 amazing young women, who are making a difference in this world. All the appearances and rehearsals were a blast . It was fun to get to spend so much time with the girls, and raise awareness about this program. My favorite appearance of the week was the lunch at Chuckie Cheese with the Big Brothers Big Sisters. My little was Caydence, and he will forever stay close to my heart. I received a $5,000 scholarship for getting first runner-up, and a $1,000 scholarship for winning the Miss America Academic Scholarship. Thank you all so much for your continual love, support, prayers and blessings. I would not be who I am today without each and every one of you!

I had my private interview with the judges at 8:45 on Tuesday morning, and it went fantastic! I then went to the Lions Club Luncheon and visited with the Lioner's, as well as watched some of our Miss Michigan contestants perform. For dinner, we went to the Muskegon Country Club, overlooking the beautiful golf course. The dinner was delicious, and we couldn't pick a better table! The women we met were unbelievably funny, and got to know us as women, not just queens.
As you can see, we had fun on the bus ride home:) The night ended with hours of girl talk, and watching the Miss Michigan video from last year.

Sydney and I posed before going to dinner. I have really enjoyed visiting with the members of various organizations, and I appreciate their support for our organization. The clubs have provided us with delicious meals, and great service--thank you. But I am looking forward to a nice cheeseburger when this week is over. Monday Dinner in Muskegon

Time is already flying by--and it's only Tuesday! Last night we went to Buffalo Wild Wings, and enjoyed countless buckets of fried wings! Not your typical pageant food--but it sure was a treat.

I just love Erinn! She and I have developed such a deep friendship, already making this experience rewarding. I am so thankful for the relationships I have made, and I am sure they will continue throughout my life.

Where to begin....these last two days have been a blur! We rehearse for hours each day, and attend special lunches and dinners. I feel blessed to be in the presence of such driven and talented women. Already, I have developed strong friendships.

In our bus on the way to Red Lobster on Sunday night, we drew quite a bit of attention--

31 beautiful women with crowns.

Miss Spirit of the State and I are ready to go out to dinner. It is so much fun to see everyone's outfits! It is like a week-long fashion show!

On Monday, we ate lunch with the Muskegon Exchange Club. Some of the contestants performed their talents for the Club.

The president of the Exchange Club is so supportive of our organization and service, that he got choked up while talking about it during his speech. I was moved to see how the Miss Michigan Organization and our passion to serve impacts others. Thank you to those of you who are involved in influential groups such as the Exchange Club!

Tomorrow morning the judges will interview me around 9:00 a.m. I am really looking forward to demonstrating my preparation and knowledge on various issues, current events, and my platform. Your thoughts and prayers would be greatly appreciated, as this is an important part of the competition. More updates soon to come!

Arrived in Muskegon to begin Miss Michigan Week!

After 13 months of serving as Miss Jackson, I arrived in Muskegon for Miss Michigan week! I feel so prepared, and ready to enjoy the week while representing Jackson. Thank you all for your support. Without you, I wouldn't be here today!

Jackson Rose Parade and Party in the Park

The Jackson Rose Festival hosted the annual Rose Parade this past Sunday beginning from downtown Jackson. In honor of the 50-year anniversary of the Rose Queen Pageant, former Rose Queens rode on a float with current titleholders and 2010 candidates immediately following in convertibles. The weather was beautiful and the crowd was amazing! Carol Ann Brigham was my Princess for the parade, and she practiced her princess wave and smile--I would say she is a natural!

Sparrow Children's Hospital Giveathon for Children's Miracle Network

The Children's Miracle Network (CMN) is the National Platform for the Miss America Organization. We are very involved with CMN even at the local level. Last Saturday I was at Lansing's Sparrow Hospital for the CMN Giveathon. Visiting patients in pediatrics was the highlight of this amazing experience. I am so proud to be a part of CMN, an organization that focuses on the health of children, and on serving as good role models for children.

State Competition for the Special Olympics

This past weekend I was at Mt Pleasant for the State Final Competition for the Special Olympics-and wow, what an inspiring event! Being a college athlete, I have the drive and determination to compete well in my sport and in my training, but it was nothing like this. These athletes were so excited, energetic and passionate about their spor! They did not let anything slow them down, and it was truly so moving to watch them succeed.

I walked into the stadium during opening ceremonies with Area 19-which was from Jackson and Calhoun County. The Central Michigan football team led each area out on the field.
I was in charge of passing out medals for the track and field events!
There were over 2,200 wonderful athletes at the Special Olympics.

This sweet lady was one of my favorites! She was so excited to win a gold medal, that she was jumping up and down, screaming with joy, and wearing the biggest smile I have ever seen. It is people like this who have made my journey so rewarding. Thank you to all the coaches and volunteers at Special Olympics who make this possible!

Spring Arbor Memorial Service

Memorial Day is a time to honor our veterans, our lost soldiers, and our military still fighting for our country. In honor of Memorial Day, I was invited to speak at the Spring Arbor Memorial Service and to ride in the parade. Unfortunately, stormy weather forced the service to be moved indoors, and the parade to be canceled.

Pictured with Homer Jackson, a veteran, Spring Arbor alum, and one of my biggest volleyball fans. Homer calls me his "Ace," and comes to all of our SAU volleyball games. Homer's dedication to our country, community, and our university is commendable. Memorial Day Fireworks at the Cascade Falls

On Saturday our 2010 Rose Queen Court performed and signed autographs as the Cascade Falls. These 10 amazing young women will be competing for my title of the Jackson County Rose Queen on September 25th, 2010.

The historic Cascades Falls is among Jackson's most valuable assets. Our co-executive, Rebecca Hilleary, organized and emceed the variety show of talent for the night, including performers from the community and all of the RoseQueen finalists. This event is always a joy, because it is a time to honor our veterans, fallen soldiers, and military men and women still fighting for our country, and the event benefits Jackson. DDA Cruise-In Car Show Judging

The Downtown Development Authority hosted the Cruise-In Car Show on Friday night in downtown Jackson. Over 500 cars were displayed in the event, 200 of which registered in the "Best in Show" Contest which I served as the sole judge!

My dad helped me reach my Best-in-Show decision. I do not know much about cars, so I considered him my personal consultant for the night! :)

This was a real-life version of the Barbie Car from my childhood. I was immediately drawn to the car, and it brought back fond memories.

This Cruise-In was a great event, because it attracted many people to downtown Jackson, and admission was free. Everyone seemed to be having fun. I was honored to be the judge and to help support downtown Jackson!

DeVos Children's Hospital Princess/Hero for a Day Event

Today I went to the DeVos Children's Hospital in Grand Rapids, for the Princess/Hero for a Day event for the patients organized by former Miss West Michigan. It was a fun and touching event, and meeting the courageous and strong young patients was inspiring.

I was in charge of one of the makeover stations, where I was able to make the little girls feel even more beautiful than they already are! :-)

Katie and Natalie, center, co-founded a business that creates non-toxic nail polish, lip balm and other products that are safe for children. Their vision and drive is admirable, and they truly have a passion for helping others.

It was pure joy to meet with the patients. For confidentiality reasons, I am not able to post their pictures, but I can assure you that the smile in their eyes made the drive to Grand Rapids well worth it! Thank you Brooke for organizing this amazing event!

Pancake Breakfast-Habitat for Humanity

Eight area high schools partnered to host a Pancake Breakfast to raise money for Jackson's Habitat for Humanity. They invited me to join them as a celebrity pancake server!

I thought the Northwest and Lumen Christi mascots were great fun, but some of the little kids were scared of them!

With the 1965 RoseQueen, who was Jackson's first RoseQueen to compete at the Miss Michigan Pageant.

I enjoyed participating in this breakfast because if was for a good cause, and it was heartening to see eight local high schools come together as a team to organize the event. The community support was amazing, and I appreciate the volunteers who spend hours building homes for those who don't have the means. Thank you to all the Habitat for Humanity supporters and volunteers.

Radiothon at Beaumont Hospital in Royal Oak-Benefiting the Children's Miracle Network

We hit the road at 5:45 in the morning, traveling from Jackson to Royal Oak's Beaumont Hospital for the Children's Miracle Network Radiothon.

RoseQueen Pageant Executive Director Chris Gorton and I managed phones for the Radiothon.

Passionate about his work, Dr. Main generously took the time to tell me his story, explaining how leukemia treatment has advanced over the last 50 years. Brian, at right, is the Beaumont's Public Relations person who gave us a tour of the hospital, and introduced us to the very kind and well-respected Dr. Main.

Pictured with the voices of Radio 96.3 WDVD, who told stories of families touched by Children's Miracle Network, and invited the listeners to call in to make a donation.

The radiothon was a huge success. Thanks to generous donors, we beat our goals every hour! It was touching to listen to the stories of families who have lost loved ones, and how it motivated people to donate to such an extraordinary cause. Thank you Beaumont for hosting such a great event.

Ladies Pink Night Out-Benefiting the Mission of Hope Cancer Foundation of Jackson

The Mission of Hope Cancer Foundation hosted a "Ladies Pink Night," a fun evening for a good cause, consisting of food, socializing and a purse auction benefitting the Foundation. The event had a successful turn-out, with standing room only!

Visiting Mr. Sparks' 3rd Grade Class

I celebrated Earth Month at Stockbridge Elementary with Mr. Sparks' 3rd grade class. We focused on bugs and butterflies. We began our afternoon by reading a book about butterflies and moths, incorporating how we as people must each independently break out of our cocoon using the strength of our determination and hard work.

The kids were great listeners and very respectful. After reading, I answered their questions about what it's like to be Miss Jackson County, and how I grew into the woman I am today.The students made creative butterflies from colorful tissue paper.
We ate "dirt pudding" and jello with worms for an afternoon snack! Yum!
The class made me this beautiful sign as a thank you!
They were so excited to get an autograph from a "famous person."

This group of kids are enthusiastic learners, and yet they were respectful and extremely polite. Mr. Sparks has done a superb job with his class!

Visiting classrooms is among my favorite appearances. These visits give the children a chance to talk to someone with a crown, and realize that with hard work and determination, they, too, have the abilitys to achieve whatever they set their mind to. It is crucial to set a good example and be a good role model for them, because we never know what impact we are making on the world.

March of Dimes Walk

The March of Dimes Walk for Babies raises money for research and the prevention of premature births and birth defects. I had the privilege of meeting some of the children who have been effected by this, and they are an inspiration to me.

Dawson was born prematurely, but is full of life, love and joy.

Sometimes we take little things for granted, like a healthy birth or a healthy pregnancy. But many families with preemies instead have learned to appreciate the simpler things in life, such as watching their children grow and develop. These families participate in organizations that raise money to help other families with premature babies. I was thankful to meet some of these wonderful families who taught me to view life in a different way. Thank you!

Fairy Festival

Each year, Jackson's School of the Arts hosts their annual Fairy Festival, attracting hundreds of girls from all over Michigan. The girls come dressed as beautiful fairy princesses, complete with sparkling wings. Flitting around the Art 634 complex, they enjoy a full day of "fairy activities," including drinking fairy nectar with the Fairy Queen--me!

The girls had many questions for the Fairy Queen, such as where Fairy Queens live, what fairies need to do to learn to fly, and why I look like a "real" person!

These princesses were precious. As the children spent time at the Fairy Festival, it was refreshing to watch their imaginations blossom, and the fun they had. And when we shared tea, these adorable little ladies looked up at me with such wonder, that I was reminded again of the privilege and responsibility that comes with my crown. Simply by setting an example I am able to make a positive impact on them. This was definitely one of my five favorite events!

The Jackson Business Professional Women's Group invited me to speak at their April dinner meeting at Steve's Ranch House. What an honor it was to visit with such accomplished and passionate women! I spoke to the group about how focus and determination have been key in balancing my school, athletics, community and RoseQueen commitments. I shared the barriers I've faced, and how I managed to overcome them and succeed.

Bone Marrow Drive at Jackson High School

On Tuesday I promoted and volunteered at a bone marrow drive hosted by Jackson High School's National Honor Society. Students were inspired to join the National Bone Marrow Registry by fellow classmate Emmarie Truman, who recently received a bone marrow transplant to treat her leukemia.

Women in Leadership Conference

On April 17, a Women in Leadership Conference was held at Spring Arbor University. This was such an enriching event, and I was fortunate to serve as the Public and Media Relations Director for the planning committee. As a result of our public relations efforts, 133 women signed up--a record-breaking enrollment.

In the morning, we worked the welcome desk, greeting the women, and registering them for the all-day conference.
I represented young professionals on the leadership panel discussion in an afternoon session. It gave me the opportunity to speak about how I balance school, Rose Queen activities, volleyball, and being a leader in the community. There were five other amazing women on this panel who were so full of knowledge and insight. They truly inspired me.

This event's purpose was to present motivational speakers and sessions to help the women feel rejuvenated and refreshed. It focused on personal, professional and spiritual development. The event was a success. More than 100 women left feeling inspired and aware that they each have the ability to make an impact as strong leaders at home and in the workplace. It was an honor to be on the leadership panel--and to be a part of such an incredible conference.

Beautiful little Lily, the daughter of a RoseQueen Board Mentor, turned 2 this past week. She invited me to attend her Princess and the Frog birthday party as a special RoseQueen guest. The kids were precious! I signed autographs, visited and played with the kids, and watched Lily open her gifts.

"Marrowthon" Road Race and Bone Marrow Drive

It was a privilege to help organize, promote and volunteer at the Ortho Rehab "Marrowthon" held on Saturday. This was the first year that the annual road race donated a portion of the race proceeds to support the Bone Marrow Registry. Thank you to the 433 people who ran or walked in this race, and to the 44 people we registered for the bone marrow registry!

On Saturday, there were hundreds of Girl Scouts from across Michigan to join in the Lock-In at Westwood Mall! It was great seeing so many girls motivated to be Girl Scouts, but also excited to meet me and Jackson's Outstanding Teen, Paige.

The American Red Cross hosted the first annual CrOsscars Academy Awards this past Sunday to raise money for the Red Cross. I was honored to Co-Emcee the event with JTV Host Bart Hawley!

AnnMarie's Brides Beautiful generously "dressed" me for the night in this amazing yellow gown. Her shop is conveniently located on the second floor of the Commonwealth Center in downtown Jackson. Thank you so much, AnnMarie!

Miss Michigan Orientation

The Miss Lighthouse Coast Pageant kicked off the Miss Michigan Orientation weekend in Muskegon. Congratulations to Miss Stephanie Frye!

Orientation was both very exiting and very nerve-racking, because we had to turn in our photos, our final paperwork, music, and advertisements. We heard speakers describe what would take place during our week of Miss Michigan competition, how to improve interview skills, and of course, what to expect if you were crowned Miss Michigan! It was incredible to look around that room and realize that one of us will become Miss Michigan 2010, and compete in Miss America! I am so blessed to have this opportunity and I am ready to prepare for the pageant this coming June!

Grass Lake Reading Month Assembly

Grass Lake Middle School started their March Madness Reading Month today, holding an assembly to kick-start the month. I was asked to speak to the student body on the topic, "The Will to Win."

After my speech, I participated in a 12-station obstacle course, with each station representing excuses about why students don't read. Among the excuses: annoying siblings (I tried to avoid a dodge ball, which hit my crown on the first try), have to clean my room (I gathered dirty clothes and dropped them all in basket), and have to do my chores (stinky farm chores, of course)!

After my speech we accepted three questions:
1. Do you get to keep your crown?
2. Can I have your phone number?
3. Will you marry me?
They stopped questions after that. The pictured above were some of the boys who asked me these questions.

The drive was an absolute success. In less than three hours, we recruited 75 people to join the Bone Marrow Registry!

Bone Marrow Drive at Pancake Breakfast in Honor of Emme Truman

A pancake breakfast was held to honor Emmarie Truman and raise money for her expenses. The event included a booth where people signed up to join the National Bone Marrow Registry. Many politicians attended and some became members of the Registry!

Congressman/volunteer Mark Schauer served coffee at the breakfast and signed up for the Registry!

Joining the Registry--perhaps saving a life--takes just four cotton swabs and simple paperwork. Volunteers from Spring Arbor University's Softball team took care of the trash, and a few of them joined the Registry! I helped County Commissioner Earl Poleski fill out his Registry paperwork.

Emme's older sister Erin (second from left) will donate bone marrow to Emme this month.

This event was an amazing team effort to help a person in need. In only three hours, we enrolled 96 people on the Registry and hundreds enjoyed breakfast together. Volunteers and diners alike felt pride that our community CAN work together to make a difference! Thank you all who helped make this possible.

7 Habits of Highly Effective Teens Workshop

As co-founder of QUESTIONS: Young Professionals of Jackson, I helped QUESTIONS host a leadership workshop for Jackson-area high school students. The workshop was based on Sean Covey's book, "7 Habits of Highly Effective Teens."

QUESTIONS board members and Jackson community leaders came to encourage the youth. We recruited 94 students to attend this all-day Saturday workshop!

We planned, organized, promoted and raised funds for this workshop in only 19 days!Facilitator Gary traveled from New York to work with the student participants.

This workshop was very successful. It was encouraging to see business and community leaders support our youth, especially during such tough economic times! Thank you to all of the sponsors and volunteers who made this event possible.

Presentation of the check from the Ladies of Harley, to the Children's Leukemia Foundation

In December, I volunteered at the Harley Davidson Dealership, wrapping presents with the Ladies of Harley. The event raised donations for the Children's Leukemia Foundation of Michigan. I was invited to the Rose City Harley Meeting after the holidays to help present the check to the CLF. It was a fun evening, and it was wonderful to realize that because of my platform, I am able to make a positive impact!

We raised $1,747 over the holidays!!
Kelli Zgieb (left) and I met Joshua at the meeting, who approached us and shared his story. Only six weeks earlier he had surgery to remove two cancerous brain tumors, and is now healthy! His energy, compassion and joy inspired me. Joshua's attitude and story underscored the importance of my platform within the Miss America Organization: Leukemia Awareness and enrolling people on the Bone Marrow Registry!

Spending the day volunteering in the office of the Children's Leukemia Foundation of Michigan was an invaluable opportunity. I now have a much better perspective on the services the Foundation provides to children with leukemia and to their families. The Troy-based Foundation is a wonderful organization that makes a positive impact on children and their families!

Bone Marrow Drive in honor of Emmarie Truman

Emmarie Truman is a 17 year-old girl from Jackson, who is currently battling Leukemia. This drive was in honor of Emmarie, and was a complete success! We had 92 people join the registry at this drive alone!

Pictured above were the other volunteers that I had the opportunity to work with. They are all friends of Emme's family, and are the ones who inspired and organized this drive.
This young gentleman is Emme's future brother-in-law. He decided to join the Registry, and possibly be a match to someone in need!
By the end of the day, we were all exhilarated! 92 people had joined the Registry, making the decision to help cancer patients. It is events like these, that make it evident that my platform can make a real difference, and possibly save lives. I am so thankful that the Miss Jackson County scholarship pageant has given me the opportunity to do my platform work. Thank you to all the workers who donated their time and energy to making this drive such a success!

Miss Spirit of the State

On Saturday I went to Grand Rapids to watch some amazing young women compete for the Miss Spirit of the State title. The winner will be able to compete in the Miss Michigan 2010 Pageant. The competition was tough, and every single girl was absolutely beautiful! Congratulations to the 2010 Miss Spirit of the State- Kathryn Morton!!

I had to use cinnamon dental floss to keep my crown on, because I forgot that I had taken out the elastic bands for a photo shoot! Sometimes you just need to get creative, and be able to think on your feet!

Wrapping with the Ladies of Harley to raise Money for the Children's Leukemia Foundation

The Ladies of Harley graciously allowed me to join their ranks for a day to raise money for the Children's Leukemia Foundation of Michigan. What a fun and amazing experience! We wrapped holiday gifts at the Motor City Harley Davidson dealership in Farmington Hills for donations. Many of the gifts were purchased at the dealership, and you can imagine how challenging it was to wrap the motorcycle parts and accessories! (I mostly wrapped Harley Davidson clothing and gift items!)

I had a lot of fun picking out my favorite bikes...this dealership was so supportive, and very generous.

This was one of the most interesting items to wrap!!

SANTA! What a special surprise...the kids were jumping up and down when Santa arrived on his red Harley loaded with toys!

By the end of the day, our wrapping had raised donations of more than $430 for the Children's Leukemia Foundation--the largest amount ever raised in a single day by the Ladies of Harley gift-wrapping program! Thank you so much to the hard-working volunteers and to the very accommodating dealership. It is people like you who make significant differences in other people's lives!

Jackson County's Outstanding Teen Paige Poling and I rode in Jackson's beautiful Christmas parade. The thousands of families who lined the downtown route watched a long and fun-filled parade of floats and vehicles, all elaborately decorated with Christmas lights, decorations, costumed-characters and nativity scenes.

It was a grand evening with thousands of smiling people lining the roads to watch the parade wind through the downtown, many of whom were dressed in Christmasy clothes! Following the parade, we signed autographs at the Michigan Theatre, where kids and adults alike came to get warm and watch "The Polar Express." The turnout was wonderful!

Meeting Miss America 2009: Katie Stam

November 13th-14th, Muskegon, Michigan

My mom and I went to Muskegon to meet Miss America Katie Stam and get a sneak preview of the wardrobe Miss Michigan would wear at the Miss America Pageant in January!

The weekend was great, and it was awesome to meet Katie Stam and get to know our Miss Michigan, Nicole Blaszczyk, better. These women are both inspiring and down-to-earth. I am so proud of how well they represent the Miss America Organization!

On Friday night Katie sang the National Anthem at the Muskegon Lumberjack's Hockey game. Hearing her sing the "Star Spangled Banner" in the arena gave us goosebumps. On Saturday Katie entertained us all with stories about her experiences as Miss America. We watched the Little Miss Michigan Pageant, followed by a nice dinner and Nicole's wardrobe showing!

Thank you to all who gave me the opportunity to have this unforgettable weekend!

The 2009 Rosequeen contestants and I rode on a float in the Jackson Rose Parade. Following the Parade, there was a big celebration in Ella Sharp Park with food, music, entertainment, face paintings, autographs and more! It was an absolute blast!

Princess Tea Party

We invited about 18 of my little friends to come over in dresses and crowns for a Princess Tea Party in my backyard. These special girls are some of my most loyal supporters who deserved to receive the "royal" treatment. We decorated picture frames together then I posed with each little princess for a special photo to put in their frame. We enjoyed a yummy lunch and tea together. We even went on a "Princess Cruise" on our lake! It was a beautiful day because I got to spend it with 18 beautiful little ladies.

Since being crowned in May, this summer has been very busy and exciting! I have had the opportunity to meet a lot of great people, learned about various organizations, and have been able to work within the community to raise awareness of the Rosequeen Scholarship Pageant. An exciting year ahead...

Good morning everyone! This is my first blog, so I am still a little unsure of how this blogging thing works! I am planning to use this blog to keep everyone informed about my journey as the 2009 Jackson County Rose Queen; and include events and pictures that I will be involved with for the next year up until I compete for Miss Michigan in June 2010. I am extremely excited to represent Jackson County, and make a difference through my platform and various appearances.

For those of you who do not know me very well, here is just a brief background about myself: I am 19 years old (almost 20!) and a student at Spring Arbor University. I am pursuing a major in Business with a minor in Advertising and Public relations. I play for the women's volleyball team, as well as serving as Presidential Ambassador, Co-Founder of Questions: Young Professionals of Jackson, member of SIFE (Students in Free Enterprise), an intern for the American Red Cross, an intern for the Enterprise Group of Jackson, Inc. a volunteer for the National Marrow Donor Program, and now the 2009 Jackson County Rose Queen. My platform is Leukemia Awareness and increasing the number of people on the Bone Marrow Registry. I chose this platform because I lost a good friend to Leukemia, and I feel it is vital to educate people about the importance of joining the National Bone Marrow registry, and possibly saving a life! My talent is different than most "beauty queens," as it is a self-written speech about making a difference, and saving lives! But I am speaking about something that is important to me, and something that I feel can influence others.

But ultimately, I want to thank everyone for their support, and express my excitement for an incredible, busy, fun, and life-changing year as Miss Jackson County!
